Our learning focus for Term 3 has been around animals and our visit to Hamilton Zoo. We wrote Information Reports and are currently writing an Argument about whether animals should be kept in zoo's. We also did some artwork based on what we saw at the zoo.

Narrative Animations
We were given a brief to write a Narrative that had the character 'Arlo Hill' and the dialogue 'which way now?' When we completed the Narrative we had to create an animation which directly reflected the story. It was like being a script writer and film producer all in one!

Math - Problem Solving
We have been given $5000.00 to design our own bedroom. Our bedroom dimensions are 3m x 2m. First we wrote a list of needs; eg. a bed, sheets, duvet and pillows and then we created our wants list. We have used mailbox flyers and the internet to search out our products, prices and dimensions of our purchases - it is very important to make sure everything we buy will fit in our room. We have our own expenditure sheets to fill in and keep track of our spending, budgeting is very important.
During this task we have had to measure and convert measurements, add, subtract, multiply, work in decimals and be spatially aware.

Narrative Writing - Describing a Setting
Byron wrote:
Drip, drip, splash, the slurping slimy substances on the jagged sharp rocks slides slowly down the sides of the boxed-in cave. Howling winds drive closer with the wet translucent mist in the cold shivering cave. The musty smell of fungus and mold override your nose. Feelings of loneliness and abandonment run through your body like a snake stalking it's prey.

I carefully and silently walked in the darkness of the putrid cave. I sniffed the toxic air of the rigid house of rocks and boulders. I kept walking into the dark abyss, there was no going back!

Procedural Writing - Sequencing
I am learning the importance of correctly sequencing instructions in a recipe.
We made Truffles but first we had to sequence the Method of the recipe, if we got it wrong ... our Truffles would be a disaster!
We made Truffles but first we had to sequence the Method of the recipe, if we got it wrong ... our Truffles would be a disaster!
After alot of discussion we decided which order we thought things should go in.
Then it was time to test our Procedures by making the Truffles following the order we had decided on.
Ingredients
Measure butter and soften, do not melt! (20 seconds in the microwave).
Measure out 1/2 cup of coconut and 1 cup of icing sugar.
Sift the icing sugar so it has no lumps.
Measure out 1/2 a packet of plain biscuits and crush with a rolling pin.
Add in 3 tablespoons of orange juice.
Keep checking the recipe throughout - you don't want them to turn out wrong!
Mix everything together (it will take some muscle power).
Roll into small balls.
Roll in coconut.
Refridgerate for approximately an hour then enjoy.
Then it was time to reflect on the whole process with a focus on our Learning Intention.
Did the Truffles turn out ok? How could we tell?
Does the sequence of the Method effect the outcome of the Truffles?
What happened or would happen if we did things in a different order?

Sign Language
This week is Sign Language Awareness Week. We had a taster course in our classroom taken by Jessica's Mum, Tui. Tui is deaf and always signs. She is very good and very fast. We learned lots of words and some sentences. Watch our movie and you will see some of the things we did. It was loads of fun and we can't wait to learn more.

Waimarino
Room 23 had a fantastic day at Waimarino on Thursday. The weather was superb but the river water was 'refreshingly chilly!'. The instructors were very impressed with everyone's 'can do' attitude and how we were all willing to give everything a go.
